The final question and additional comments from the survey for the possible creation of
a Downtown Business District.
Too many people doing business in G.I.
Nothing
Jobs
Attitude of people that they can get a better deal in Grand Island
We need to catch the attention of possible customers traveling through St Paul. Let's make our community warm and inviting.
I've only been apart of this community for two years now. From what I have seen, this is a great community and I feel not much change is needed.
Wal-Mart is an example not the entire problem. For our community to be all that it can, each citizen or household had got to want that to happen. We need to educate our locals and enjoy our visitors. As a business owner I am not asking every local to shop my business 100%.
Believe St. Paul is going to experience a growth spurt we need an arranged effort. Development Corp finally is leading in this direction. Many years ago it was a disaster and waste of money and leadership was poor at the time.
Lack of economic education on what keeps a small town alive shopping in GI hurts this town. Our own city buys supplies at Sam’s.
We need additional clean-up pf junk, unlicensed vehicles (Who Allows) [sic] Temporary storages to become permanent (structures) [sic] in violation of setbacks?
Need to save for future, not spend for future.
Lack of forward thinking by city leaders.
Younger involvement, retirement folk involvement, we need a recruiter to mobilize these people and show results.
Additional Comments |
Welcome Flags on the Hwy. Design a welcome sign North & South of the Hwy.
Business owners would be the likely people to take the lead, however, the 40-50 group did their time and we are just trying to get the work done. When we retire I think several will be here to work on these projects for something to do.
If you have any 60-70 year olds that were in business maybe they would help. The atmosphere of "I don't want to belong" must be figured out and addressed both locally and nationally.
We need a city administrator.
St Paul is a beautiful, quaint, historic town that has sooo much to offer, it just needs to be discovered and promoted. All people would benefit by an economic boom and growth.
I would be open to having a mural depicting St Paul (Promoting St Paul) on the side of my building (If City Council would Approve).
But if we educate and train them to shop at home 1 in 5x or 1 in 10x that’s a start! Area people (patrons) need to understand that small town business is no longer a sustainable venture that is here to stay. We need a chance at a percentage of everybody’s disposable income to make OUR community viable. St Paul Development Corp should help, explain, educate and promote the businesses we have, the services we offer. Take a survey of the people on what we need to do to get their businesses. Is it our daily hours, poor service, product availability, prices, poor lighting, etc??
The River of Life Church building is an example of improvement of an old building yet keeping it historically sound.
We all want new toys so our community, state looks better. Where does money come from? Property taxes, income taxes- why do you think no big companies want to locate in Nebraska. The good life is over taxed.
I think we should be looking at filling empty buildings first, get more businesses first.
Good survey- keep up the good work.
Other than the Chamber, there is no "Town" leadership. The development Corp. is stepping forward but there is a need for another source of ideas and planning. Look at how small the numbers of St. Paul residents are really active in the future of St. Paul.

Sounds like a lot of owners are expecting sympathy for letting there own places get rundown and look shoddy. No wonder no one does business here.
I agree, St Paul needs a city administrator. It seems that too few people have all the control, and the council does not know all information needed to make good decisions. Towns smaller than us have one, it would pay for itself quickly.
St. Paul should capitalize on its historic downtown. Lighting, historic preservation, and beautifucation should be included in a five- and ten-year plan. The city still maintains it brick streets which is another positive.
Include more arts projects in the district.
Consider the Lied Mainstreet Program.
A city administrator is needed.
More attention is needed to the city's downtown parks. They need better care. Another city park is needed on the west side of town.
I wouldn't really say that the brick streets are maintained. The only thing that is maintained are my struts from having to drive over potholes and heaving bricks. You would think that the city employees would know this from all the driving they do around town.
